How this estimate works

The estimator uses a £325,000 basic nil-rate band and a residence nil-rate band of up to £175,000. The residence allowance is limited by the qualifying home value and reduces by £1 for every £2 the net estate exceeds £2 million. Confirmed transferable allowances can increase both bands. The standard rate is 40%; a 36% rate may apply in qualifying charity cases.

Important: this is a simplified educational estimate, not tax or legal advice. It does not fully calculate taper relief on individual gifts, trusts, business or agricultural relief, foreign assets, lifetime exemptions, downsizing relief or every charity-rate rule. Rules can apply differently to individual circumstances. Consider a solicitor, tax adviser or HMRC guidance before acting.

Common questions

What is the UK Inheritance Tax threshold?

The standard nil-rate band is £325,000. A qualifying home left to direct descendants may add up to £175,000, subject to limits and tapering for estates above £2 million.

Can married couples pass on a larger estate tax-free?

Assets left to a spouse or civil partner are generally exempt. Unused percentages of the basic and residence allowances may also be claimed by the survivor's estate, potentially increasing the available thresholds.

Are gifts always free of Inheritance Tax after seven years?

Many outright gifts fall outside the estate after seven years, but exemptions, gifts with reservation, trusts and the order and timing of gifts can change the result. Get professional advice for a reliable calculation.
